Buying Custom Furniture

There are several reasons to commission a piece of furniture. Possibly it is the desire to surround yourself with things of beauty and meaning. Perhaps the aesthetic expressed in the work of a particular maker attracts you, or it could be that you have a specific need. More often than not it is some combination of these.

Clients, who have the taste and sophistication to commission custom furniture, play a special role in the collaboration between themselves and the furniture maker. It is important to choose someone whose work inspires you, and to express your functional needs and aesthetic preferences.

It will take time to create a piece that is designed and built especially for you. Unlike production furniture, the process takes time, as unique aesthetic and engineering problems need to be solved. The time involved is not always predictable, but as they say good things are worth the wait.

The procedure is simple. After a discussion of your requirements including:  function, size, materials and budget, I will begin designing your piece. There is a $350 non refundable design fee, which offsets the development of the design, and is deductable from the cost of the piece. I will present you with a drawing of the design and an estimate. It is at this juncture that further refinements or modifications may be discussed.

To initiate the production of your piece, I require a signed purchase order along with a 50% deposit. The balance is due upon completion and prior to shipping your order. Orders are prioritized based on receipt of deposit.

Please feel free to discuss your ideas with me. I look forward to working with you.
